Foolishness Abounds
I cannot understand why the leaders of this nation have gotten so stupid.
30 odd years ago, women in this country got the right to choose. This is a good thing. Nevertheless, there have been many who have sought, in a myriad of ways, to take that choice away. The latest stupidity is to force pregnant teenage girls to get their parents permission before they will be permitted to get an abortion.
If they have a good relationship with their parents they will have no problem taking this kind of problem to their parents, with or without a law. In fact, if they have a good relationship with their parents they will likely not need abortion services at all!
However, if they are too afraid of their parents to confide in them, what make our leaders think that fear of the law will have any effect whatsoever?
I am here to point out that it will not!
New Hampshire, as I write this, is on the verge of enacting their own version of this idiocy. I want to inform the New Hampshire legislature and the governor of New Hampshire what will happen.
Parent child relationships are built over years, laws will not change this. If you really want to do something good and reduce the number of teenage pregnancies that end in abortion. Offer child rearing classes to newlyweds.
For 30 plus years a very small minority of Americans (often called the religious right) have tried very hard to chip away at the right of a woman to choose for herself. They have staged protests, lobbied legislators and preached, all to no avail. They have managed to trigger terrorist acts-the bombing of abortion clinics, the murder of abortion providers. What they have not managed to do is stop even one abortion. They have, however, managed to get the leadership of the Republican party to back their idiocy and kow tow to a minority of Americans.
A few members of the clergy and the anti-abortion clique have managed to impact abortion. These are the ones who have spurned trying to pass laws, spurned protests, spurned terrorism. These are the few who have worked to educate the youth of their comunity and instill in them a belief that all children are gifts from God, although it may not be a gift intended for them. For only in education will we ever hope to stop abortion.
Remember: Two wrongs never make a right!
God gave us the right to choose. To take that away, even a little bit, is wrong. Doing wrong in a effort to stop a wrong only creates a bigger wrong. Let us all do right!
Stop the stupidity! Do not try to take away a woman's right to choose. Any person who is old enough to get pregnant is a woman and has the right to choose.
However there is a law I would advocate. Require minors to receive counsleing prior to getting an abortion. Under such a system, it would be the counselor who would decide if the parents should be contacted.
Amen
