The Rules of Lying
A major fast food chain sends many of its managers to a course that teaches them how to steal.  It seems odd, why would a restaurant want their managers to know how to steal?  In fact, many retail chains offer similar courses.  Why?
It is simple, a manager who knows how to steal also knows how to spot others who try to steal.  If you know how to do something then you know what to look for to keep others from doing it.
On the same plane, I want to teach you how to lie so you can spot others who are lying.
Do not lie, tell part of the truth to get your listeners to arrive at a false conclusion.
Do not lie, tell the truth in such a way that your listeners will believe it to be a lie.
Use misdirection, tell a real truth that is similar to a truth you want others to believe is a lie.
Keep your lies simple to make it harder for others to detect them.
The first rule - Just tell part of the truth.  Half truths can cause your listeners to arrive at false conclusions.  In this way, if your listeners realize that they were misled you can still say that you told only truths.  You can't be held responsible if they jumped to wrong conclusions.  This is a typical ploy of people who are trying to get you to support their agenda.
The second rule - Tell the truth in such a manner as no one will believe it.  This can be difficult, but when done right you can convince the hardest skeptic that the truth is actually false.  Believing the truth to be false they will then be very amenable to believing almost any falsehood that is opposite the truth.
Say your company cut benefits your employees will get after they retire.  You do this to save money and meet requests to increase current benefits.  The result is that you can cut payments to retirement plans and use the money to fund existing plans.  When someone points out that you cut benefits to future retirees, get a few employees to tell the world that you actually increased benefits.
The forth rule - Complex lies provide all kinds of ways to show themselves.  If any part of your lie is shown to be a lie, many people will begin to look very closely to all your other statements.  Keep things simple, do not provide a lot of details.
How do you combat these techniques and uncover the lies for what they are?
Listen very carefully.
Do your own research with independent sources.
Use your common sense.
Listen very carefully.

Listen to what is said.  Compare various statements.  The truth will always be internally consistant, it is the very rare liar who can keep things consistant.  They usually get too complex in their lies so if you listen you will find in their own statements proof that they are lying.
If you do your own research you will almost always be able to learn the whole truth and arrive at the correct conclusions.  In the political arena is usually means listening carefully to all the candidates.  Each will tell you facts that support their position, you can therefore get all the facts if you listen to all the candidates.  This is why we have an adversarial legal system: the prosecutor presents the facts that support his theory of the crime and the defense presents the facts that either support and alternative theory or proves the prosecuters theory is wrong.
Further, when you do your own research you will often beable to show that the truth told in such a way to make you believe it a lie is, in reality, the truth.  When you know the truth from facts (and not just faith) no one can lead you astray.  Of course, there are some things that cannot be proven and faith can be good.  Faith in God and Jesus Christ is great.  Just always make sure your faith never causes you to ignore facts.
Listen to what is said, understand it.  Then when someone tries to use misdirection you will hear where they are saying one truth that only seems to belie the other truth.
Satan is the great deceiver.  He uses lies, half-truths and misdirection to break your faith, to make you believe in lies.  Satan is alive and well in our society he causes people who want to stop abortion to threaten, destroy, maim and even kill because of his lies.  It is okay to try to convince a woman abortion is wrong.  It is okay to try to convince her that it would be better to place the child for adoption.  It is not okay to use any kind of force - threats, insults, or even laws - to stop her from her own path.  God gave us the freedom to sin and he reserved unto Himself the right to punish us for our sins.  When we punish a sinner we are commiting sin ourselves.
Remember:
Matthew 18:21-23.
Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, "Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?"  Jesus answered, "I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.  "Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants.
and
Matthew 6:14-15.
For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Satan will try hard to convince you that your evil acts, your failure to forgive, is actually done in the name of the Lord.  Listen to him not, know and understand the Word of God.  The Bible is your guide, it is your greatest tool to combat lies.
Satan wants to convince you that wrong is right and right is wrong.

Amen
