Teaching our Youth
We educate our youth the same way we did 100 years ago.
Why?
We have made huge progress in understanding cognitive development in children.  This should lead our educators to a better, more effective way to teach our youth.  Nevertheless, our educators typically ignore the field of psychology and continue to teach in the same old tired way.
The first thing we need to teach children is not math, or history, or arithmetic.  We must start by teaching children to communicate!  They need to learn to read, write, and speak!  They must not only know how to listen but to communicate their own knowledge back to the teacher.
How can we expect to teach anything else until a child is able to communicate effectively.
1
We start with the alphabet.
2
We teach them to read.
3
We teach them to write.
4
We teach then to put their ideas and thoughts into words
--public speaking.
Now we can begin to teach them arithmetic.  Now we can begin to teach them creative writing, history, social studies, and science.
